A documentary, 15 screen prints, and clay sculptures, presenting different situations in which the will to live is so strong that it takes control over life itself: people drowning and fighting their savior for their next breath; malignant cells’ desire to reproduce, consequently consuming their host; and patients who willingly let others take away their consciousness in order to recover.
The series of works under the title Still Under Treatment explores the delicate boundary between control and loss of control, between being a living, conscious, and active person, and becoming a body whose fate and function are entirely in the hands of others. The group includes a documentary film, a series of clay sculptures, and a series of screen prints. Each component examines the concept of “treatment” from a different perspective, and together they create an picture in which the human dimension is destabilized and dissolves into procedures that place both body and mind in extreme states.
The film documents six patients at the moment of transition from wakefulness to general anesthesia. This is a charged moment in which the person ceases to be a “subject” with a voice, will, and presence, and instantly becomes a body alone: powerless, completely dependent on the strangers around them. The patients’ consciousness dissipates in front of the camera, communication with them fades, and what remains is only a body undergoing a procedure – a living material for which the medical system assumes responsibility. The abrupt shift from person to procedure exposes the fracture line between the human being and their body, illustrating the state in which we become a vulnerable entity entrusted entirely to foreign hands.
The series of clay sculptures embodies figures suffering from fractures and tumors on their bodies, which emerge from the clay itself and gain volume and shape. The very act of “creating” the disease or fracture in clay mirrors the way growths or fractures form in the biological body.
The series of prints presents scenes of drowning rescues alongside images of gymnasts. On the surface, the two situations appear opposed: one an emergency lifethreatening situation, the other a symbol of control, strength, and precision. Yet in both, the same tension exists: The rescue scenes, based on illustrations from first aid manuals, focus on the moment in which the rescuer must subdue and gain control over the drowning person’s uncontrollable survival instinct, which, in the pursuit of one more breath, might drag the rescuer under, drown him, and thereby undermine the act of saving. The prints show how, in the struggle for life, paradox emerges – the very desire to survive can prevent survival. Similarly, in the images of gymnasts, whose bodies appear strong, skilled, and controlled, the figures are in fact trapped, constrained within apparatuses, or having tumors. Images of strength and bodily discipline become representations of vulnerability, of the body controlled by other forces.
The three components – the film, the sculptures, and the prints – describe different states, yet together they map a broader picture of treatment. Treatment here is not only in the narrow sense of a medical or psychological procedure but as an existential condition in which the boundaries between control and loss of control, between subject and object, blur. Deep physical dependence on systems, on others, and on the caregiver is revealed, and within this spectrum between complete control and total loss of control, a delicate space unfolds in which we are still under treatment.
סרט דוקומנטרי, 15 הדפסי רשת ופסלי חימר, מציגים סיטואציות בהן הרצון לחיות הוא כה חזק, עד שהוא משתלט על החיים עצמם: טובע מטביע את המציל שלו מתוך דחף בלתי נשלט לנשום את הנשימה הבאה; תאים ממאירים שיצר ההתרבות שלהם מחסל את הגוף בו הם חיים; אנשים שמפקידים מרצון את השליטה בהכרה שלהם בידי אנשים אחרים, במטרה להחלים.
מקבץ ההעבודות תחת כותרת עדיין בטיפול עוסקות בגבול הדק שבין שליטה לאובדן שליטה, בין היות אדם חי, מודע ופעיל, לבין הפיכתו לגוף שגורלו ותפקודו נתונים בידי אחרים. הקבוצה כוללת סרט דוקומנטרי, סדרת פסלי חימר וסדרת הדפסי רשת. כל אחד מן החלקים בוחן את המושג ״טיפול״ מזווית אחרת, וביחד הם מרכיבים תמונה שבה הממד האנושי מתערער ונמוג אל תוך פרוצדורות שממקמות את הגוף ואת הנפש במצבים קיצוניים.
בסרט מתועדים שישה מטופלים ברגע המעבר מעירות להרדמה כללית. זהו רגע טעון שבו האדם חדל להיות “סובייקט” בעל קול, רצון ונוכחות, והופך ברגע אחד לגוף בלבד: חסר שליטה, תלוי לחלוטין בזרים שמקיפים אותו. התודעה של המטופלים מתפוגגת אל מול המצלמה, השיחה איתם נמוגה, ומה שנשאר הוא רק גוף שעובר פרוצדורה – חומר חי שהמערכת הרפואית נוטלת עליו אחריות. המעבר החד מאדם לפרוצדורה חושף את קו השבר שבין האדם לבין גופו, וממחיש את המצב בו אנחנו הופכים לישות פגיעה המופקדת כליל בידיים זרות.
סדרת פסלי החימר מגלמת דמויות הסובלות משברים ומגידולים על גופם המתהווים מתוך החומר עצמו, מקבלים נפח וצורה בחימר. עצם פעולת ה”יצירה” של המחלה או השבר בחימר מזכירה את הדרך שבה גידולים או שברים נוצרים בגוף הביולוגי. סדרת ההדפסים מציגה סצנות של הצלה מטביעה לצד דימויים של מתעמלים. שתי הסיטואציות, ההצלה וההתעמלות, נראות לכאורה הפוכות: האחת מצב חירום של סכנת חיים, השנייה סמל לשליטה, כוח ודיוק. אך בעצם בשתיהן מתקיים אותו המתח
– סצנות ההצלה, המבוססות על איורים מתוך ספרי עזרה ראשונה, מתמקדות ברגע שבו המציל חייב להכניע ולהשתלט על יצר ההישרדות הבלתי נשלט של הטובע שבעבור נשימה נוספת אחת, עשוי להטביע את המציל ובכך לטרפד את פעולת ההצלה. ההדפסים מראים כיצד דווקא במאבק על החיים נחשף פרדוקס. התשוקה לשרוד היא זו שתמנע את ההישרדות. גם בדימויי המתעמלים, שגופם נראה חזק, מיומן ושולט, הדמויות בעצם לכודות, כבולות בתוך מכשירים או נושאות גידולים. מדימויים של כוח ומשמעת גופנית הם הופכים לייצוגים של פגיעּות, של גוף הנשלט בידי כוחות נוספים.
שלושת החלקים – הסרט, הפסלים וההדפסים – אמנם מתארים מצבים שונים אך ביחד הם משרטטים תמונה רחבה של מצב של טיפול. טיפול לא רק במובן הצר של פרוצדורה רפואית או נפשית, אלא כמצב קיומי שבו מיטשטשים הגבולות בין שליטה
לאובדן שליטה, בין סובייקט לאובייקט, מתגלה תלות פיסית עמוקה במערכות, בזולת, במטפל, ובין שליטה מוחלטת לאובדן שליטה מוחלט, נפרש מרחב עדין שבו אנחנו עדיין בטיפול.
